VFX artists are blown away by the practical effects used in The Ten Commandments, which was released 67 years ago. The 1956 film features Planet of the Apes star Charlton Heston as Moses and adapts the Book of Exodus from the Bible. The film includes a major scene where Moses parts the Red Sea so he can take the Hebrews to safety.
Now, Corridor Crew has released a new episode of VFX Artists React on YouTube, which sees three VFX artists commentating on Moses parting the Red Sea in The Ten Commandments.
The segment, which starts at 15:24, gives insight into how Paramount used vast amounts of real water and editing tricks to make it look like Moses was parting the Red Sea. The VFX artists praise the movie for its use of practical effects to create such an impressive scene.
Charlton Heston’s History With Practical VFX Explained
The effects used in The Ten Commandments wouldn’t be the only time its star, Heston, was in an epic drama film that involved impressive practical effects. Following his role as Moses, Heston would go on to star in the titular role of 1959’s Ben-Hur and as John the Baptist in 1965’s The Greatest Story Ever Told. Heston also branched out from Biblical epics, starring in Orson Wells’ 1958 film noir Touch of Evil, and the 1973 thriller Soylent Green.
However, Heston is best known for his role as astronaut George Taylor in the 1968 sci-fi classic Planet of the Apes. Much like The Ten Commandments, Planet of the Apes used impressive practical effects to bring a society of anthropomorphic apes to life. The Planet of the Apes franchise was rebooted in 2011, using detailed, digital VFX that are impressive in their own right. The next film in the series, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, releases on May 24, 2024.
Because of Heston’s involvement in epic films and movies with stunning practical effects, it’s no surprise The Ten Commandments includes VFX that can still be marveled at today. Not only does this make The Ten Commandments a key part of Heston’s career, but of VFX history as a whole. The Ten Commandments is a testament to VFX artists’ dedication to impressive effects and the effort used to bring the impossible to life.
