Extraction 2 director Sam Hargrave breaks down why Keanu Reeves’ John Wick would lose in a fight against Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake. After the success of the first film in 2020, Hemsworth’s mercenary is back from the dead in Extraction 2, which sees him rescuing a new target in Eastern Europe. The sequel looks to be upping the action from the first film, featuring fight choreography that isn’t dissimilar to that of the popular John Wick franchise.
Ahead of the Extraction 2 release date, Hargrave is asked in a recent interview with Collider who he thinks would win in a fight between Rake and Wick. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the director chooses Rake as the victor, citing a major development in John Wick: Chapter 4 as a deciding factor. Check out Hargrave’s explanation below:
“That’s like the greatest question of all time. I mean, that’s tough because, you know, I’m partial to the character of Tyler Rake. I’m gonna take away John Wick’s bulletproof suit and I’m gonna give it to Tyler Rake. The dude’s a badass, so there’s no debate.”
“No one– John Wick is a verb now, like to John Wick someone, that’s a thing. He’s a legend onscreen in his own movies, and yet he’s a legend now as an action icon. So no, that dude doesn’t go down without a fight, but the fourth movie proves he can go down! And we’ve proven that our guy can be killed and brought back from the dead, so you gotta give it to Tyler Rake. A long, hard-fought battle, to be sure, but I think you gotta go with Tyler Rake.”
Would Tyler Rake Really Win Against John Wick?
While it’s always difficult to compare the relative power levels of two fictional characters in different universes, there are some cold hard figures that may shed light on who would really win – each character’s kill counts. In the first John Wick, Reeves’ assassin kills 77 people. By comparison, Rake kills 183 people during the events of Extraction.
Important to note, however, is that Wick kills more bad guys in each of the sequels, with his John Wick: Chapter 4 body count clocking in at around 140. Across all four films in the franchise, Wick has now killed a whopping 439 people. That averages out to about 109 per movie, though, which still falls below Rake’s 183.
While Rake may win in the kill count department, it shouldn’t be discounted that Wick has many more years of experience that he would be bringing to the table, with the character consistently shown beating those who are younger and more agile than he is. Hargrave also cites Wick’s apparent death as a major factor in his decision, but with the announcement that John Wick 5 is in development, it appears Reeves’ assassin has a knack for returning from the dead much like Rake does in Extraction 2.
