Ghostbusters II star Kurt Fuller has spoken about a potential return in the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2. Serving as a secondary antagonist in the franchise’s first sequel, Fuller’s character Jack Hardemeyer worked as the aide to the New York City mayor and made several attempts at thwarting the Ghostbusters’ efforts to combat the growing threat of Vigo the Carpathian’s psychomagnotheric slime. While it would have made little sense for Fuller’s character to return for 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife given its rural setting, the new sequel is expected to see the action return to New York City, potentially opening the door for such a cameo.
Most recently, Fuller was questioned by ComicBook.com whether viewers could expect his Ghostbusters II character to make an appearance in the latest film. Admitting that he was “sitting by the phone”, the actor suggested he was more than willing to reprise the role if asked. However, his response would indicate that he has not been approached for such an appearance. Check out his answer below:
You know why I’m sitting by the phone? I will take that call. I’m in New York right now. So, uh, I’m here. Where are they? I don’t know. I think that we only have two hours. I think so. We’ll see who they get in.
What Will Happen In The Ghostbusters: Afterlife Sequel?
After a largely failed attempt at rebooting the franchise with 2016’s Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife leaned heavily into nostalgia and affection for the original films. Not only did the film focus on the family of Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler, but it also brought Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz, Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman, and Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore back for a much-celebrated reunion. Meanwhile, the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 also appears set to continue this trend.
With the post-credit scenes of the last film teasing a return to the iconic Ghostbusters firehouse, it seems likely the new film will continue to tap heavily into audiences’ fondness for the first two films. While it is currently unclear whether viewers can expect any of the original cast members to return, both Hudson and Aykroyd have publicly expressed their interest in appearing, with the former even claiming to have read the film’s script. What is known, however, is that the new sequel will continue to follow Spengler’s family with Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Carrie Coon, and Paul Rudd all set to reprise their respective roles.
Meanwhile, speculation is rife regarding what new supernatural threats are set to form the basis of the Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2. With the previous film already harkening back to 1984’s original villain Gozer the Gozerian, many theories have begun to float the possibility of a return of Ghostbusters II’s Vigo. Such a move would also make room for other Ghostbusters II callbacks, including a potential cameo from Fuller’s Jack Hardemeyer. At this stage, however, audiences have little actual information to go on, and such theories are little more than conjecture.
