New fan art imagines Andrew Garfield’s web-crawler wearing the black Venom symbiote suit, making The Amazing Spider-Man 3 even more tantalizing.
Andrew Garfield dons a black Venom symbiote suit in a new piece of fan art, making the absence of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 even more tragic. Released in 2012, The Amazing Spider-Man introduced Garfield’s take on the titular web-crawler, five years after Tobey Maguire bid farewell to the role. The film, which is directed by Marc Webb, was met with mostly positive reviews from critics and performed well at the box office, going on to earn over $758 million worldwide. Garfield would reprise the role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014, which proved much more divisive with critics and was a box office disappointment, earning $709 million. Plans for a third movie stalled, but Garfield would return in a supporting capacity in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Now, a new piece of fan art from artist Subi Özil imagines Garfield’s Spider-Man wearing a black Venom symbiote suit, something that only Maguire’s Spider-Man has had the honor of doing in live-action.
The art gives Garfield’s symbiote suit a much larger and more comic-accurate logo on the chest, which is in contrast to the much more toned-down version featured on Maguire’s symbiote suit. Calls for Sony to make The Amazing Spider-Man 3 continue, and this latest fan art suggests a Venom crossover story would be a perfect fit for Garfield’s web-crawler.
Will The Amazing Spider-Man 3 Ever Happen?
Despite the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ended up being something of a disappointment both critically and financially, love for Garfield’s version of the hero has persisted. This, in conjunction with a fan-favorite appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, resulted in widespread enthusiasm for a third film in his franchise. After all, Garfield is the only recent actor to have played the part and not gotten a full trilogy, in addition to the fact that the second film very clearly sets up additional adventures and a run-in with the Sinister Six. Despite audience enthusiasm and #MakeTASM3 previously trending several times on Twitter, it’s less clear if The Amazing Spider-Man 3 will ever actually come to fruition.
A third film is up to the powers that be at Sony, but Garfield himself has expressed a willingness to return if the opportunity presents itself. In an interview following the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the actor said that he would be “definitely open to something if it felt right,” regarding his return as Spider-Man. Tom Holland has also expressed his hope to see The Amazing Spider-Man 3 happen, saying that Sony and Garfield would have his “full support” should they decide to move forward. Aside from an acknowledgment of the #MakeTASM3 hashtag on Twitter, Sony has unfortunately not yet addressed whether a third film is at all on their radar.
With Holland not officially signed on for any more solo Spider-Man movies, the future of the character, in general, is somewhat up in the air right now. In addition to spurring calls for Garfield to get another solo movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home also resulted in renewed enthusiasm for Maguire to return in his own fourth film. Currently, Holland feels like the most likely candidate to get another solo entry (or several), but that doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. Even if The Amazing Spider-Man 3 doesn’t end up happening, Garfield could very well return in more of a supporting capacity as the web-crawler in the MCU due to the machinations of the multiverse.
