Chris Evans talks about a potential Captain America return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga. The Infinity Saga marked the end for one of the MCU’s beloved Avengers. After starring as Steve Rogers in several films, Evans finished his time as Captain America. As he literally passed on the shield to Falcon, Sam Wilson became the MCU’s new Captain America. Anthony Mackie is currently shooting Captain America: New World Order, which arrives next year.
Many have been wondering if Evans would ever consider returning to the MCU as Steve Rogers. Evans tackled that question last weekend at this year’s C2E2 (via ComicBook.) While the MCU veteran is open to it, Evans also sees it as a tough challenge. Despite having a major love for the Captain America role, he also doesn’t want to mess with how he finished his arc. For now, Evans feels the timing isn’t right, sharing the following:
It’s tough, because look, I love that role deeply. He means so much to me, and I really do. I think there’s more Steve Rogers stories tell, sure. But at the same time, I’m very, very precious with it. I’d become, you know, it’s like this little shiny thing that I have that I love so much, and I just don’t want to mess up in any way, and I was a part of something that was so special for the special period of time and in a way, it really landed so well. As much as I’m connected to that role and love telling those stories and working with those people. It doesn’t quite feel right right now.
Should Chris Evans Ever Return To The MCU?
To say that Steve’s ending in Avengers: Endgame is a perfect conclusion is an understatement. As Iron Man sacrificed himself, the MCU film gave Steve his own ending that shouldn’t be tampered with at all. It’s also possible that present-time Steve has passed away from old age at this point in the MCU. However, there are other ways for Evans to return to the franchise.
With The Multiverse Saga fully underway, the MCU is getting more into the Variants concept. The most refreshing way for Evans to come back is if he plays a new version of Captain America. There are many directions Marvel Studios could go with a Variant Steve. Either they do a different take on the hero, or they explore a villainous version. Having Evans play an evil iteration could be a way to integrate the Captain Hydra version of Steve.
It would be shocking at this point if Evans never returned to the MCU. If The Multiverse Saga were to end without Evans even doing a cameo, it would be a wasted opportunity. Hopefully, Evans as any version of Captain America will happen by the time Phase 6 is over.
