Karen Gillan explains the new dynamic between Gamora and Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. When the two sisters were first introduced, Nebula seemed like a bitter, spiteful woman full of anger towards both Thanos and Gamora. However, as more of her traumatic past was revealed, it became clear that Nebula faced the brunt of Thanos’ rage as she tortured her by replacing part of her with cybernetic implants. Although their relationship was damaged by Thanos pitting them against each other for years, they truly loved each other, with Gamora sacrificing herself to save Nebula from Thanos.

In a recent interview, Gillan spoke with Screen Rant about Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. She discussed the new dynamic between Nebula and Gamora, which in some ways reverses their original Guardians of the Galaxy dynamic. Gillan explained that while they still care deeply for each other as sisters, Gamora is now the harder one while Nebula has become more compassionate. Check out Gillan’s full quote below:

Karen Gillan: They haven’t really interesting dynamic now; even the way they greet each other is kind of hilarious. I won’t give anything away, but they’ve switched places in a way. Nebula is now the more compassionate, evolved one and Gamora is the crazy, badass one who’s willing to kill anyone to do what she needs to do.

It’s really interesting to see that dynamic play out. But they’re still sisters. I think, no matter what, they still care about each other deeply.

How Gamora Is Different In GOTG Vol. 3

This is not the same Gamora first introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy. This alternate version didn’t leave Thanos until the version of Nebula who lived through both Guardians movies, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, pushed her to. She never joined the Guardians, which has created a vastly different person. However, it seems the one consistency between these characters is their love for Nebula, even if it is expressed in very different ways.

Nebula has slowly opened up throughout the first two Guardians movies, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, accepting that Gamora loved her and that she could find a place with the ragtag group of misfits. Avengers: Endgame was a huge step for Nebula when she bonded with Tony Stark when they were stranded in space and with Rocket as the only other individual from the Guardians to survive Thanos’ snap. Nebula had time to grow, becoming more compassionate in part because of Gamora’s willingness to sacrifice herself to save her.

The original Gamora experienced that same growth in Guardians of the Galaxy: finding a family, opening herself up to being vulnerable, and becoming more compassionate. However, this alternative version left Thanos earlier because Nebula inspired her, then left again after defeating Thanos instead of joining the Guardians, sending her on a vastly different path. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Gamora will therefore have a very different relationship with the other Guardians. It does seem that the one constant for Nebula and Gamora, however, is caring deeply for each other after surviving the trauma of Thanos.
