James Gunn Reveals When Fans Can Expect DC Universe Casting Update

Following the exciting announcement of the first projects in the DC Universe slate, James Gunn reveals when fans can expect casting news.

The DC Universe is going to be announcing some of its new heroes soon, according to universe architect James Gunn. Gunn and Peter Safran are now in charge of DC’s movies and TV shows for the foreseeable future, with the duo recently revealing the first ten projects that are part of their DC Universe Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. While Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and some members from Peacemaker were revealed to be returning, the DC Universe has yet to cast its new heroes, and Gunn has now given the answer to when that casting update might come.

Gunn answered a fan on Twitter about the new heroes in the DCU reset, revealing that at least one major casting announcement will come in the next six months.

Based on the already announced projects for the first chapter of the new DC Universe, it is possible that Gunn means casting for the animated series Creature Commandos or the Waller show are coming soon, as those seem like the ones to be finished first. However, it is also possible that the major casting announcement that Gunn said “Yes” to could be the new Superman actor. In any case, there are a few different ways the announcement could be done.

While some projects like DCU Batman’s The Brave and the Bold are a bit further away and should start casting in a couple of years, there are still enough projects in the DC Universe slate that would either start production next year — such as Superman: Legacy to meet its 2025 release date — or will get underway this year, with the animated Creature Commandos already in production. As such, DC will need to get started on casting those projects, and an announcement could come in three different ways, with the first being a replica of the DCU slate reveal.

Gunn and Safran could do another private event for the press, with the DCU reveals being shared by Gunn in a special video announcement to the public the following day. That tactic did mostly work for the DCU Chapter One reveal; however, the full slate managed to leak a few hours after the private event ended. It is likely that Gunn and Safran would not want to take chances on something like their Superman casting leaking beforehand, so a major event to the public would be the best way to reveal the new DC Universe castings.

Gunn’s six-month timeframe likely means that the new DC Universe actors will be revealed during this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, which takes place in July. SDCC is known to be the meeting spot for all things superhero, and Gunn knows of Marvel’s impressive use of the event — which he could want to replicate in the DCU’s favor. If an SDCC reveal does not happen, it is possible that Gunn could revive the DC FanDome, presenting the new DCU castings in an event fully geared towards DC fans.
