John Wick 4 Blasts Past Huge Domestic Box Office Milestone

John Wick: Chapter 4 has already passed a huge box office milestone before the end of its second weekend. The film, which opened on March 24, is the latest outing for Keanu Reeves’ not-so-ex-assassin, who debuted in the 2014 action film John Wick seeking revenge for the murder of his dog and the theft of his car. The franchise has accomplished the unusual feat of having each entry gross higher than the previous one, and Chapter 4 has so far continued that trend with the highest-grossing opening weekend of the franchise.

Per Deadline, the John Wick sequel has continued its hot streak at the domestic box office. This weekend, it has already crossed the $100 million milestone on the way to a $122.9 million cumulative gross by the end of Sunday. This will make it the fifth highest-grossing U.S. film of the year so far, behind Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Creed III, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Avatar: The Way of Water.

What is the Next Film to Follow John Wick Past the $100 Million Milestone?

John Wick: Chapter 4‘s success comes smack dab in the middle of an incredible strong March at the box office. In fact, one of its March peers, Scream VI, may creep up the charts to cross the $100 million mark right behind it. The slasher sequel began the weekend at $93 million and may slowly push its way past the threshold over the next few weekends if it’s lucky.

However, Scream VI‘s $100 million gross may not be guaranteed, so the next most likely titles to meet that benchmark are likely not out yet. This weekend’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves could very well cross that number at some point in its run after its $40 million opening. The new films coming in early April are the most likely contenders, though.

John Wick: Chapter 4 will likely be joined in that rarefied circle by next weekend’s release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film has the twin strengths of being attached to a huge video game property and being the next film from the box office giant Illumination Entertainment, which also puts out the lucrative Despicable Me/Minions franchise. This won’t diminish John Wick‘s achievements, but rather be another positive sign of box office recovery in the pandemic era.
