Teen Wolf: The Movie’s shocking death of a major character wasn’t part of the original plan, though the star signed off on it once it was proposed.
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Teen Wolf: The Movie
Teen Wolf: The Movie features a huge character death, but it wasn’t originally going to be part of the script. The film, which premiered on Paramount+, featured the return of many popular characters from the MTV series Teen Wolf, including Tyler Posey as Scott McCall, Crystal Reed as Allison Argent, and Tyler Hoechlin as Derek Hale. Derek was one of the series’ main characters, appearing in 63 episodes between 2011 and 2017. However, the character’s triumphant return became a tragedy when he sacrificed his life to save Scott from the Nogitsune, holding it down so it could be engulfed in hellfire.
To celebrate the release of Teen Wolf: The Movie, Entertainment Weekly sat down with director Jeff Davis to discuss that momentous death. Davis revealed that Derek’s death wasn’t in the original script, but he wanted the movie to have higher stakes than a typical episode of the series and make it feel “grand.” He approached Hoechlin, who is also an executive producer on the film, with the idea and the star said, “Let’s go for it.” Read Davis’ full quote below:
[It wasn’t always part of the plan but] you want to make big choices. You don’t want to do a movie and say, “Well that could’ve just been another episode of the show.” You want to make it feel grand.
I didn’t want to do it without Tyler’s blessing, so I called him up and said, “What do you think if we gave Derek a big, heroic, sacrificial ending?'”And he was like, “I’m in. Let’s go for it.”
You second-guess yourself all the time. You say, “Are we really doing this? Maybe we should plan something that’ll bring him back.” But there’s also part of you that wants to commit. [But] it’s Teen Wolf. People can always come back.
Derek Could Come Back If Teen Wolf Continues (But Probably Won’t)
Given the many supernatural forces that haunt Beacon Hills in Teen Wolf, it would be entirely possible for Derek to come back to life at some point down the road in a future entry from the franchise. As Davis said, the universe of the series can allow for pretty much anything to happen, especially if the audiences want it bad enough. In fact, Teen Wolf: The Movie already pulled off a similar trick, resurrecting Allison despite her tragic death earlier in the series.
However, there are some potential roadblocks to Hoechlin returning as Derek in any future Teen Wolf projects. For one, there is no guarantee that such projects will exist, as the Teen Wolf movie was designed to be a standalone continuation. There is also the matter that Hoechlin may be too busy to return, as the actor has already moved on to play another iconic character on television, taking the role of the titular superhero on The CW’s Superman & Lois, which premieres season 3 this March.
It is more likely that Derek’s legacy in the franchise will live on through his son Eli (Vince Mattis), who he declared to be part of Scott’s pack before making his heroic sacrifice at the end of Teen Wolf: The Movie. As a dramatic storyline, it also makes sense to have Eli grapple with how his father’s sacrifice will shape his future. This film could truly operate as a passing of the torch, as many legacy sequels from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Scream 2022 have tried to do over the decades, with varying degrees of success.
