Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige reveals the real reason that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was chosen to kick off Phase 5 of the MCU.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania kicks off Phase 5 of the MCU, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige now reveals why. Directed by Peyton Reed, who also directed both previous films in the franchise, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is set to transport Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) to the Quantum Realm with Cassie (Kathryn Newton), Hope (Evangeline Lilly), Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Hank Pym (Michael Douglass). The upcoming film is also set to introduce Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror into the MCU, who is expected to serve as the franchise’s next big bad after the defeat of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

In a new Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania featurette released by the official Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel account, Feige reveals why the movie was chosen as the first installment of Phase 5.

According to the president of Marvel Studios, audiences often underestimate Scott’s real power as a superhero, making him a fitting character to face off against the MCU’s biggest new villain, Kang. The featurette also includes a brief behind-the-scenes look at how Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was filmed, in addition to comments from Rudd and Lilly regarding just how epic the movie will feel in a movie theater. Check out Feige’s full comment below:

“We always love doing the unexpected with Scott Lang. He is, arguably, the character that is the most under-estimated. Ant-Man became the key to saving the universe in Avengers: Endgame. So, carrying that tradition we thought, ‘Hey, let’s use this film to kick off Phase 5.'”

How Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania Could Shape Phases 5 & 6

One of the biggest complaints levied at Phase 4 of the MCU is that many of the films don’t feel very connected and don’t ultimately feel like they’re part of a larger story. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania could change that, introducing a villain who will serve as a Thanos-level threat for at least one explosive upcoming Phase 6 entry, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Thanos was teased very briefly in Phases 1 and 2 before he was fully unveiled in Phase 3 in Avengers: Infinity War, but featuring Kang so prominently in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, a non-Avengers movie, speaks to just how prominent a role the villain could play in shaping stories to come.

It’s already been teased that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will have repercussions on the films that follow it but, currently, it’s not exactly clear what those repercussions will be. Since the upcoming movie will feature Kang stranded in the Quantum Realm, it seems likely, however, that the story will end with the villain no longer stranded, now free to exert his influence upon the world. Majors hasn’t been confirmed to appear as Kang in any Phase 5 movies outside of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, but the villain’s mastery of time travel and the multiverse could potentially end up drastically altering the MCU timeline or any number of other major surprises.

The only movies currently slated to be released as part of Phase 6 include Deadpool 3, Fantastic Four, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and Avengers: Secret Wars, but it’s certainly possible that more films will be announced in the months ahead. Since Kang is being teased as a villain on par with and potentially even more powerful than Thanos, it’s possible that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty won’t mark the end of his tenure in the MCU, with the villain perhaps also featuring in Avengers: Secret Wars. Many questions remain about how exactly Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will shape events in the remainder of the Multiverse Saga, but its introduction of Kang alone already has the potential for serious consequences.
