Taron Egerton elaborates on why he isn’t right to play the next James Bond. Before No Time to Die was even released in theaters in 2021, there has been an ongoing discussion about which actor will succeed Daniel Craig as 007. Egerton, known for starring as the spy recruit Eggsy in the Kingsman franchise, has been a popular fancast for the role of the iconic MI6 superspy. However, Egerton recently revealed he was never in the running to be the next Bond.
During a recent interview with The Telegraph promoting his new movie Tetris, Egerton elaborates on why he won’t play Bond. The Kingsman star cites the physical challenges of staying in superb shape and the other immense responsibilities that come with playing the character. Egerton also reiterates he has never been contacted about playing Bond. Read what he says below:
I don’t think I’m the right choice for it. You have to be consistently statuesque to be that guy. And that’s something that I am still striving for. I’ve always struggled with my weight. [Playing Bond] is a bit like being a brand ambassador as well as being an actor. And that could be really fun in microcosm, but I’m sure I read that Barbara Broccoli said that it’s a 15-year commitment. It’s sort of irrelevant how I feel about it, anyway, because I can tell you there have been zero phone calls.
Why Taron Egerton Isn’t Right For The Next James Bond
By Egerton’s own admission, the 5-feet-9-inch actor isn’t quite “statuesque” enough to play James Bond, as he stands one inch shorter than Craig, who was criticized for being too short. This has led to rumors that the next James Bond actor will be taller than 5-feet-10-inches, as well as under 40 years of age. In addition to Egerton, this would rule out other fan favorites like Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy, and Idris Elba, the last of whom has also firmly ruled himself out of the running. Meanwhile, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Regé-Jean Page have emerged as frontrunners.
Egerton also seems unwilling to make the 10-12 year commitment that franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson expect the next James Bond actor to make to the role. All in all, it’s hard to blame Egerton for not wanting to accept the arduous undertaking that is playing Bond. Like his fellow fan favorites, Egerton is probably too famous to play Bond anyway. Since winning a Golden Globe for playing Elton John in Rocketman, Egerton has remained busy by starring in the Apple TV+ miniseries Black Bird and has his new Tetris movie on the way.
