Michael B. Jordan’s real boxing skills are on display in a Creed III behind-the-scenes video. When Adonis Creed’s (Jordan) childhood friend Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors) finally gets out of prison after 18 years, the two find each other in the ring looking to finally set their troubled past behind them. Creed III was released to positive reviews from both critics and audiences alike, garnering just over $185 million at the box office to date.
Ann “Mitt Queen” Najjar starred as herself in Creed III and recently shared a behind-the-scenes video that shows her warming up Jordan up before his boxing scenes.
Najjar runs through a drill in the ring with members of the crew looking on and applauding Jordan’s swift hands. The Creed franchise has highlighted Jordan’s real-life boxing skills over the course of three movies.
Why Creed 3’s Final Bout Stands Out in the Rocky Franchise
Released in 1976, Rocky‘s Academy Award-winning sports drama laid the structural framework for all future films in the series. Except for Rocky V, the movies conclude with a climactic boxing match in a ring, most of which go the distance. Creed III proves to be no exception as the final bout pits Creed against Damian in a vicious match of stamina and brutality. Like Stallone before him, Jordan immersed himself in boxing, training and sculpting his body to simulate the look of a real fighter to bring to life a champion onscreen.
The majority of the franchise’s boxing matches remain somewhat grounded in reality, generally filmed in a style that simulates watching a real fight on television. However, a number of Rocky‘s big bouts included stylized moments, employing flashbacks, visions, and dramatic closeups to show the boxer’s emotions. Creed III took these methods a step further to convey the deeply-rooted emotions between Creed and Damian by employing avant-garde techniques and taking inspiration from anime-style fights.
During Creed III‘s final match, the two friends found themselves separated from the rest of the world, with the arena’s audience absent and their cheers muted. This showed Creed and Damian’s intense focus on each other as if nothing else mattered in the world except resolving their issues in that ring. Instead of backing up against the ropes, Creed found himself slammed against the bars of a jail cell in a visual metaphor of his and Damian’s journey. With Jordan expressing interest in continuing the franchise through spinoffs and a potential Creed III sequel, audiences will have to be patient to see what filmmaking techniques he employs in his next entry in the franchise.
