An adorable video of puppies trying to snuggle Keanu Reeves is a perfect reminder of John Wick’s love of dogs, and why the Baba Yaga was so mad.

A Keanu Reeves puppy video is a perfect reminder of how the John Wick franchise began. Starring Reeves as the eponymous assassin, the John Wick franchise currently consists of four installments, including the newly-released John Wick: Chapter 4, with a spinoff limited series, The Continental, and film, Ballerina, on the way. The entire franchise’s inciting incident occurs when a group of Russian gangsters break into John Wick’s home and kill his beagle puppy, which was a final gift from his recently deceased wife, leading the legendary hitman to come out of retirement and seek revenge against the men responsible.

Reeves recently appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show to promote John Wick: Chapter 4 ahead of its release date and it also fittingly happened to be National Puppy Day. When Reeves appeared on stage, a pen of puppies literally broke down their plastic pen trying to cuddle the John Wick star. Watch the adorable video below:

John Wick’s Love Of Dogs Has Extended To Keanu Reeves

The Reeves puppy video is the perfect reminder of how Wick’s love of the cute little canines is what set the stage for the first film and in turn, the globe-trotting franchise known for its visceral action and intricate world-building. Since watching Wick’s puppy die is painful and heartbreaking, it serves as the perfect inciting incident for the franchise and gives the assassin meaningful motivation to come out of retirement and enact revenge against those responsible in whatever ruthless way he sees fit. The puppy also represents much more than a pet for Wick, but his connection to his late wife.

At the end of John Wick, the assassin adopts a new dog from a shelter, who plays an important role in Chapter 3 – Parabellum when Halle Berry’s character and her pack of killer canines are introduced. As Wick’s love of dogs has continued throughout the film series, it has extended to Reeves and become an important part of the actor’s persona during press events. Reeves also recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and participated in the “Pup Quiz,” receiving the opportunity to snuggle a puppy without a tragic ending.
