Suicide Squad 2016 Director Calls Warner Bros’ Cut A Hack Job

David Ayer, who directed 2016’s Suicide Squad movie, calls Warner Bros’ theatrical cut a hack job. The DCEU, which launched in 2013, has had a bumpy journey to say the least. Several films have been produced throughout the decade, with a few still being released this year. However, only a handful have been critical and commercial successes. Others have either been received negatively but done well at the box office or vice versa.

One of the DCEU’s box office winners was Ayer’s Suicide Squad, which was released in 2016. The filmmaker recently responded to a fan on Twitter where Ayer criticized Warner Bros.’s tempering with his film.

Ayer made it clear that while his cut wasn’t perfect, it triumphed over the “hack job” that Warner Bros. did. The Suicide Squad director also brought up how people who have seen his cut share that sentiment too.

How Warner Bros. Changed David Ayer’s Suicide Squad Cut

While Suicide Squad was a success, Ayer didn’t get to direct its sequel. Instead, James Gunn ended up helming The Suicide Squad, which was a soft sequel to Ayer’s film. Over the last few years, more details have emerged about what Warner Bros. changed about Ayer’s DCEU movie. A key difference is its overall tone, as it was darker before the studio requested changes.

For years, there have been requests for Warner Bros. to release Ayer’s original director’s cut of Suicide Squad. Several characters had their arcs trimmed down in favor of more comedy and jokes. Jared Leto’s Joker even had a bigger role to play in Suicide Squad before the cut was altered. One of the key players, Diablo, would have actually survived the climax. There is at least 40 unreleased minutes of the film, according to Ayer.

Time will tell if DC Studios will ever release Ayer’s Suicide Squad cut, whether it be on HBO Max or somewhere else. With Gunn focusing on the new DC Universe, it’s hard to imagine the director’s cut ever getting released. But with Elseworlds being a key factor of the DC Universe, there is potential for Suicide Squad down the line.
