Jason Momoa was expecting a lot more on set drama when he joined the cast of Fast X. Momoa will be playing the main antagonist in the upcoming Fast & Furious film, Dante Reyes, who is the son of Hernan Reyes, the villain in 2011’s Fast Five. Momoa got his first big break playing Khal Drogo on Game Of Thrones, a role which he has since parlayed into massive movie success, including his casting as the current Aquaman for DC Studios.
In the latest issue of Total Film (via ComicBook.com), Momoa discussed some early misgivings he had about what the on set experience would be like for Fast X. Momoa explained how he was aware of several behind-the-scenes controversies that have plagued the Fast Saga in recent years, which made him apprehensive about what the atmosphere on set would be like, though was pleased by how “supportive” the atomsphere was on set. I was expecting there to be a lot of – I mean, to be completely honest – drama, and you’re like, ‘I want nothing to do with this.’ But I saw nothing of the sort. It was amazing. Everyone was so supportive. I had a ball with Vin. I was just shocked at how cool everyone was. No one was jaded; everyone was just really, really happy to be there.
Breaking Down The Fast & Furious Franchise’s BTS Issues
While Momoa “had a ball” with Vin Diesel, that was not everyone’s experience working with the star on Fast X. After directing five entries in the Fast Saga, director Justin Lin dropped out of Fast X due to creative differences and issues between him and Diesel. Diesel reportedly arrived to the set out of shape, was often late, and didn’t remember many of his lines, with one argument between him and Lin escalating to the point of a slammed door and Lin shouting “This movie is not worth my mental health.”
Lin isn’t the only one who bristled at Diesel’s on set behavior. Dwayne Johnson, who first appeared in Fast Five as Luke Hobbs but has not featured in the mainline franchise since Fate Of The Furious, also had issues with Diesel. The feud between Johnson and Diesel is well-documented and became public knowledge in 2016 when Johnson made a now-deleted Instagram post where he referred to unspecified male cast members as “candy a–es“, which many thought was a dig at Diesel. The feud contributed to Johnson’s absence in 2021’s F9, which the actor was originally supposed to be a part of.
The two actors subsequently got into a battle of thinly veiled social media posts about one another, which eventually escalated during pre-production of F9. At this point, fellow Fast & Furious veteran Tyrese Gibson joined the fray by publicly blaming Johnson for F9‘s production delays, which may have also contributed to Johnson’s departure from that project and his absence in Fast X. The feud between Diesel and Johnson was also likely a factor in the production of 2017’s Fate Of The Furious, in which the two actors never shot a scene together despite both playing major roles in the story.
