Producer Jeremy Latcham reveals that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves scrapped the inclusion of the grippli due to costs. The film, based on the popular role-playing game, premiered on March 31 and follows bard Edgin Darvis (Chris Pine) as he sets forth on a journey to recover a lost relic accompanied by an unlikely group of allies. While the movie does feature several characters and monsters from its source material, some NPCs, including the grippli, were left out.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Latcham explained that while the filmmakers wanted to include the grippli, it was not something they could afford. Honor Among Thieves still brings other Dungeons & Dragons creatures to life, but the producer shared that the cost of building a grippli puppet for a small appearance would have been too much. “The only thing that we didn’t get to do that we really wanted to was when Xenk meets the dragonborn in the fishing village. In the script we had originally had a grippli, which is this type of frog person, and we couldn’t afford it. We just did not have the money to spend on a grippli puppet from Legacy, which was going to be probably $100,000, for literally a one-line joke that seemed silly at best. Because Xenk just walks up and says, ‘Jenkli, my boy.’ And he says, ‘Jenkli to you, good sir.’ And it was like, can we really justify building a full on grippli boy with puppeteers and animatronics and motion capture? And we thought that might be, from a financial standpoint, a step too far.“
Other D&D Creatures Missing From Honor Among Thieves
Latcham also teased a chase scene involving a tortle that was cut from the beginning of the film. In the tabletop game, the non-player characters, much like turtles, have large shells and claws that can be used as weapons, but are typically slow-moving. Due to the sizable budget of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, it makes sense that not every creature would have been incorporated, though it seems the grippli and tortle could have been fun.
It is worth wondering if any D&D characters not present in the movie, including ogres and golems, were also considered. While their inclusion might have excited longtime fans, there are still a number of other recognizable creatures shown in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The Gelatinous Cube, Aarakocra, Mimic, and more were featured in the film, and used during some memorable moments.
If a potential sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves gets made, it will be interesting to see what characters return, and if the grippli is able to make an appearance. Given the positive reactions from critics and audiences, another movie does seem possible, but the cost of their insertion would be unknown.
