Jack Black has cast his vote for who should play Wario in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, and it’s a dream come true for fans. Black lent his voice to Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which was released on April 5, alongside Chris Pratt’s Mario and Anya Taylor-Joy’s Princess Peach. The film has broken several massive box-office records, including the biggest domestic opening for a video game-adapted film with $204.6 million over its first five days of release.

In an interview with GameSpot, Black pitches his casting idea for Wario in a potential Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, saying the role should go to Pedro Pascal. Black says it isn’t guaranteed that Bowser would reappear as a villain in future Super Mario Bros. films and, instead, there might be a different villain for each installment. Read Black’s full comment below:

“It’s not a given that Bowser will return. You know, I did a few Kung Fu Panda movies, and it was a different villain every movie. They may do the same thing… You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.”

Will There Be a Super Mario Bros. Movie Sequel?

Over the past several years, Pascal has risen to immense stardom between his starring roles in The Mandalorian and HBO’s The Last of Us. However, it wasn’t until a recent Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Pascal as a much darker, grittier version of Mario that fans of the gaming franchise began to eagerly campaign for Pascal’s involvement in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While the role of Mario had already been given to Pratt, Black’s suggestion could see Pascal entering the universe in another capacity.

While there has not yet been a The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 announcement, there has been interest in creating a full Super Mario film franchise since 2021. Producer and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri has said the team isn’t ready to talk about sequel and spinoff projects just yet, but the Super Mario Bros. Movie post-credits scene teased at a sequel that could possibly star Yoshi. There has also been interest from Seth Rogen, who voiced Donkey Kong, to do a Donkey Kong spinoff film.

With The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s massive box-office and critical success, a sequel film is certainly not out of the question. And, with Pratt having gotten casting backlash from the time the film was announced, Illumination may choose to listen to fan demands when it comes to casting new characters. While Pascal hasn’t responded to Black’s comment, The Super Mario Bros. Movie fans would undoubtedly love to see the Mandalorian himself enter the Mushroom Kingdom.
