Will Luke’s Force Ghost Be In Rey’s Star Wars Movie? Lucasfilm Head Responds

Will Luke’s Force ghost appear in Star Wars: New Jedi Order, Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy responds. Legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker had been one of, if not the primary protagonist of the franchise since it started back in the ’70s. Luckily, despite his death in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill can continue to appear as the character thanks to the concept of Force ghosts.

Despite this, however, seeing Luke’s Force ghost in Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars: New Jedi Order isn’t confirmed — at least not yet. Speaking with Variety during Star Wars Celebrations 2023 in London, Kennedy admits that they still haven’t decided yet if they’re bringing back the iconic Jedi. Read her full quote below:

“I don’t know if we’ll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or [on] Force ghosts or things like that, but certainly, the spirit of what he represents to her is going to be significant.”

Why Luke’s Force Ghost Needs To Be In Rey’s New Star Wars Film

Lucasfilm has already brought back Luke as a Force ghost after his death in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, he appeared before the discouraged Rey after she found out about her true lineage. Hamill’s appearance in the film was brief, but his scene with Ridley was integral in setting up the final battle against Palpatine. At the very end of the blockbuster, Force ghosts Luke and Leia once again appeared, but in Tatooine.

Between this and Luke’s role in helping Rey become a Jedi, it’s almost imperative that he appears in Shareem Obaid-Chinoy Star Wars: New Jedi Order. The fact that he tried and failed catastrophically to do the same decades before is further motivation for his return. Force ghost Luke could guide Rey through her new challenge by also revealing more of what happened during his time trying to rebuild the Jedi Order.

Suffice it to say, Luke’s appearance in Star Wars: New Jedi Order makes sense narratively speaking. It not only serves his story, but Rey’s as well since he was essentially her Jedi Master. If anything, this is the best-case scenario for his return to the space opera as Lucasfilm has a legitimate reason to bring him back other than wanting a legacy character cameo — something that has been a point of criticism before.
