Unnerving AI-generated art reimagined legendary Hollywood actor Tom Hanks as Toy Story‘s Woody. Beginning his career in the early 80s with small roles in film and television, he soon landed a lead role in the gender-bending TV comedy, Bosom Buddies. With humorous hits including Splash, The Money Pit, Dragnet, and Big, Hanks shifted genres in the 1990s and starred in award-winning dramas, including Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 12, Saving Private Ryan, and The Green Mile. However, he never forgot his comedic roots and took the lead role in the first-of-its-kind computer-generated animated film, Toy Story, as Andy’s favorite cowboy toy Woody.

Sporting Woody’s recognizable outfit, Hanks also bears the stuffed doll’s physical proportions, giving the image its uncanny appearance. Instead of the AI system creating an image of the actor in Woody’s clothes, Hanks’ head appears massive on the toy’s small body, contributing to the character’s surreal visage.
What’s Next in the Toy Story Franchise
Released in 1995, Toy Story made cinematic history, propelling Pixar to become the premier CG animation studio. With a sequel in 1999, Toy Story became the company’s first franchise, spawning three direct sequels and four television series. 2022’s spinoff movie Lightyear told the in-universe of astronaut space ranger action figure Buzz Lightyear with Chris Evans replacing franchise star Tim Allen in the voice role.
Receiving generally positive reviews from critics, Lightyear failed to meet box office expectations, earning only $226.4 million against its $200 million budget. Although the adventure film sports a post-credits scene teasing a possible sequel, Lightyear 2 has yet to be announced. Due to the film being a financial flop, it is unlikely Disney/Pixar will greenlight a follow-up.
However, Toy Story 5 was recently announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger, set to tell another chapter in Woody and Buzz’s story three decades after the original film. Allen teased his and Hanks’ return in the upcoming film, although no casting announcements have officially been made. With both Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 concluding with proper endings to the franchise, it brought questions about whether another entry in the franchise is worth it. With Hanks likely to reprise his role for yet another Toy Story, perhaps the film series will finally see its end.
