Power Rangers Composer Pitches Once & Always Becoming Its Own Series

The Power Rangers are celebrating their 30th anniversary with the release of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, a film that is a standalone revisitation of the original Power Rangers series. Original cast members David Yost and Walter Jones are back as Billy and Zach, respectively, and Barbara Goodson returns to once again voice classic Mighty Morphin antagonist Rita Repulsa in this darker, deeper Power Rangers story. Picking up decades after the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, Zach and Billy are weathered world-savers, and Rita Repulsa boasts a seemingly robotic face and body.

Also returning is original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers composer Ron Wasserman. Wasserman composed the iconic Mighty Morphin Power Rangers theme song, and excitedly discussed the opportunity he was given to compose more mature music to fit the new tone of this project during an exclusive interview with Screen Rant. In the same interview, Wasserman just as eagerly shared his hope that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always will morph into a full-on resurrection of the flagship series, pitching a way for it to happen. Here’s what he had to say:

I’m hoping, and I think there is plenty of room for this to become its own series, where they touch on the past, but bring in some new things. They can be a little bit like this; [they can be] more complicated and have more depth emotionally. I think it’s also a way to keep the franchise alive. I realize they’re still doing the other stuff, but I think it could be a whole new market for Hasbro. It feels like it.

Once & Always Proves The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Have Stories Left To Tell

At first glance, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always feels like a film not many thought to ask for, and yet it is a promising sign of potential for the long-dormant characters. The willingness of Hasbro to produce a more mature iteration of a classically campy series opens the door to future stories with a similar tone. As long as some of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers actors are willing to continue reprising their roles, there is room to explore a world still defended by older, weathered Power Rangers.

The new Netflix film may be a more mature take on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but where it will sit on the tonal spectrum between being for children and catering to the nostalgia of its original audience of now-adult millennials remains to be seen. The best clue for the future likely lies in the title of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always; if the film is successful, Hasbro may well decide to drop the “once” and lean into the “always“.
