A new trailer for The Boogeyman has been released, providing a new look at the nightmare-filled Stephen King adaptation. Based on King’s 1973 short story of the same name, the upcoming film is directed by Rob Savage and tells the story of two siblings dealing with a terrifying entity that feeds on their collective suffering. The film stars Vivien Lyra Blair (Obi-Wan Kenobi) as Sawyer, Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) as Sadie, and Chris Messina (Argo) as Will.
Now, ahead of the film’s June release, 20th Century Studios has released a new trailer for The Boogeyman, showing off the revival of King’s nightmarish story.
The trailer, featured above, doesn’t provide a clear look at the titular creature but does include a number of scares, in addition to hinting at the trauma at the center of the story.
What The Boogeyman Trailer Reveals About The Movie
It remains to be seen what the general audience response to The Boogeyman will be, but the film follows the release of Children of the Corn, Firestarter, and Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, three other King adaptations that weren’t received very positively. The trailer for The Boogeyman, however, suggests that this latest adaptation could break this trend. The trailer provides a closer look at Blair and Thatcher’s characters and their flawed dynamic, suggesting it will be a core pillar of the film.
Both Sawyer and Sadie are still reeling from the death of their mother, and the trailer makes clear that although they find solace in each other’s company, their pain is also the source of friction. Their father Will is shown to be somewhat distant in the trailer, and this lack of support is why Sawyer and Sadie are shown largely dealing with their terrifying experiences alone. As a therapist, Will also plays a key role in the film by meeting with Lester (David Dastmalchian), who is ultimately responsible for introducing the eponymous creature into their home.
While The Boogeyman trailer makes clear that Sawyer and Sadie’s emotional arcs will be a large part of the story, it also affirms that the adaptation won’t be skimping out on the scares. There are several standout jumpscare moments from the trailer, including the creature breaking down Sadie’s door and then later pulling Will and Sawyer back into the house by the front door. It remains to be seen how The Boogeyman will compare to other recent King adaptations, but the film is already shaping up to be a nightmarish affair in the best way possible.
