Casino Royale, The Devil Wears Prada, and Mission: Impossible are just a few of the major Hollywood blockbusters from which Rachel McAdams has turned down roles during her acting career. McAdams had her major breakthrough in 2004 when she starred in the teen comedy Mean Girls as well as the romantic drama The Notebook, both of which have gone on to gain cult classic status.
While speaking with Bustle, McAdams discussed her mixed feelings about turning down films that went on to great box office success. Some of the films she turned down include Casino Royale, The Devil Wears Prada (which McAdams actually turned down three times), Mission: Impossible III, Get Smart, and Iron Man. The Canadian actor said that while she does have some regrets about turning down the roles, she didn’t feel those films were quite right for her at a time in her life during which she took two years off acting to recenter herself. There’s certainly things like ‘I wish I’d done that. [But then] I step back and go, ‘That was the right person for that.’ I felt guilty for not capitalizing on the opportunity that I was being given, because I knew I was in such a lucky spot. But I also knew it wasn’t quite jiving with my personality and what I needed to stay sane. There were definitely some anxious moments of wondering if I was just throwing it all away, and why was I doing that? It’s taken years to understand what I intuitively was doing.
How McAdams Has Found Success Without Blockbusters
McAdams has generally eschewed appearing in blockbuster films during her career, instead choosing to forge a path that has allowed her to challenge herself in a wide variety of films from different genres. However, there is one exception, as the actor did portray Christine Palmer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Doctor Strange in 2016 and its 2022 sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
From the outset, McAdams’s acting range was apparent as she was able to deliver the catty teen humor of the iconic Regina George in Mean Girls while also showing off her skill in building dramatic and romantic chemistry with Ryan Gosling in The Notebook. In 2005, she continued to keep audiences guessing with the roles she chose, showing off her ability to make the audience laugh in Wedding Crashers and embody the psychological torment of her character in Wes Craven’s psychological thriller Red Eye.
She appeared in Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris in 2011 in a rare turn as an unlikeable antagonist, and she proved her comedy credentials once again with her portrayal of a woman obsessed with competition in 2018’s Game Night. Rachel McAdams‘ defining year was in 2015 when she appeared in the gritty boxing drama Southpaw, was the standout in the acclaimed crime series True Detective season 2, and put forth perhaps the best performance of her career as an investigative journalist in Spotlight, which earned her first Oscar nomination.
